The ANDRITZ Smart Smelt Spout Robot is designed to automatically clean recovery boiler smelt spouts without human interaction. In recovery boiler operations, smelt spouts are continuously exposed to molten smelt, which can accumulate and block the spout openings — creating a hazardous cleaning task that traditionally requires operators to work in close proximity to a high-temperature smelt flow. The system is based on heavy duty industrial robots, delivered with a central safety control unit, individual robot controllers, and a comprehensive safety system based on safety fences and doors with magnetic locks. This design eliminates the need for human presence during the cleaning operation, significantly reducing operational risk for plant personnel. The central control unit can be connected to the plant DCS for added situational awareness and remote control, enabling operators to monitor and manage the cleaning cycle from a safe distance. The result is consistent, reliable smelt spout maintenance with improved safety performance and reduced dependence on manual intervention in a hazardous operating zone.
